This is part of a post I just made to another forum, where the purpose of Jesus' resurrection came up. I'm posting it here because I thought some of you would appreciate the connection I made between Acts 17:30-31 and Luke 16:30-31.
---------------------------
As for his resurrection, even Scripture states that it was to furnish proof that Jesus was the promised Messiah:
Acts 17:30-31 NASB
(30) "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,
(31) because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead."
Also, in John 2 we see that his resurrection was proof of his authority (as Messiah). Most of those Jews did not believe, but his disciples recognized the proof of the sign.
John 2:18-22 NASB
(18) The Jews then said to Him, "What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?"
(19) Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."
(20) The Jews then said, "It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?"
(21) But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
(22) So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
Notice how the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16 relates to the statement made in Acts 17:30-31 (quoted above) regarding repentance and the sign of someone being raised from the dead:
Luke 16:30-31 NASB
(30) "But he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!'
(31) "But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'"
