Has anyone else encountered the title "First Lady" being applied to a pastor's wife, or even to the pastor when the pastor is a woman? This seems to be a trend in Pentecostal churches. I find it to be really, really offensive.

Not me...I have only heard the term in reference to the U.S. president.

Never heard of it that context. Strange. Sounds as if it caters to the egos of people.

It used to be that being a wife was the higher position as opposed to being a concubine. I suppose First Lady is better since you get to capitalize it! It certainly elevates her helpmeet status - at least perhaps in the eyes of some.

.... Sounds as if it caters to the egos of people. Definitely. What boggles my mind is that these same people preach and teach the Bible, yet apparently see nothing wrong with elevating themselves above others in this way.

When you look at the practices adopted by heretical groups you begin to see what it is they have in common. And the first is how they elevate some members above the others when they become leaders. And then they don 'priestly' robes and even mitres to wear to set them apart to give them honor above the others. Soon you find special privileges are extended to them and exemption from other practices imposed on the congregation. My favorite is how the Pope must travel around in a bulletproof vehicle and is surrounded by bodyguards whereever he goes. Their model may be religious but it is still worldly and man centered and easy to spot! Calling the pastor's wife 'First Lady' is not that far from 'Queen of Heaven'...
