I think that one of the better things that is coming forward thru Preterism is a better understanding of the OT types and shadows in how they point to Christ and our completed redemption. Digging into the OT to find the places where Jesus and the apostles quoted the scriptures has really brought some bright light into a much neglected area. And it ought to put speculation to rest.
However, I see a trend happening that the Dispy's have long been noted for, in that once an idea is presented with a little light it gets adopted quickly without others really developing or researching it further.
Such is the day of atonement type found in Lev 16 & 23. I first ran across this in House Divided in the section by David Green, but then Don Preston also has it in his 70 Weeks of Daniel, and just recently Alan Bondar included it in his Easter sermon.
The idea put forth is that Jesus had to appear again from the holy of holies for us to know that the Father had accepted the sacrifice for our atonement - and this was not completed until 70AD and is thus how we know He came a 2nd time. I think this is reaching too far to find biblical support for an invisible coming as the fulfillment of Jesus prophecy. And it takes away from the redemption the cross accomplished which makes this a serious error.
The fact is that Jesus did make the required priestly appearance so that His disciples could know His offering had been accepted by the Father and that was when He appeared to them alive from the dead on the 3rd day after the cross. The day of atonement however has other elements to it, but the consecration of the holy place - in heaven, was accomplished by His first appearance to the Father for the acceptance of His blood offering.
Yet Alan B. says that the priest had to enter into the holy of holies a 2nd time to make the offering of the fat on the altar and so He had to appear again from that place (to fit Heb 9:28) - but that is not the case if we look at the text. The offering of the fat on the altar takes place in the inner sanctuary where the other priests served - in their presence. And that is also where the scapegoat is released - with the aid of other men. The final burnt offering is then made outside the camp also with other men, where the bodies are completely burned.
The type is not finished just because the high priest reappeared from the first offering. But 70 AD is not prolonging that part of this type whereby our sins are forgiven. To do so would be to put off any covering we might have by His blood until 70AD as well - leaving any NT saints unredeemed til then.
The reason this type does cover the whole period from the cross to the consummation, is because it shows us the preparation needed for the dead to be raised. Aaron did not reenter the holy of holies on that day, but Jesus did - having descended from heaven to gather the saints and bring them to the Father - which did NOT require a 2nd visible appearance in the earth. But only to those whom He raised. And that is why Heb 9:28 speaks of a 2nd appearance TO THE FATHER which is in line with the direction of His first appearance into the holy of holies, for now the way has been opened for them to enter in. And this occurred when the bodies of the sacrifices for the priests and the people were burned outside the camp.
That is why Jesus said it is finished [5055 teleo] at the cross and it is done [1096 ginomai - 'it is come'] at the pouring out of the 7th vial. What is come at that point? The kingdom of God!
Because at the harvest, the wheat was first gathered into the barn while the others were gathered and bound to be burned. And that is in line with the two reapings in Rev 14. It is only after that harvest whereby the dead are raised, that the grapes of wrath are trod - and the day of atonement is complete.
And that is why we don't see Aaron going back into the holy of holies, because it was not the work of the earthly priest, but that of the heavenly one.
