Euty is over at CARM trying to pull 2 comings of Christ by using an analogy for the '2nd or 3rd watch' statement from Luke 12:38.
I have been musing on whether this analogy can give us a picture of anything or not.
1st off it may be significant that Jesus came walking on water in the 4th watch (Mat 14:25; Mark 6:48) - and also that He rose from the dead in perhaps the 3rd watch since it was before daybreak. The First of the firstfruits to be raised from the dead.
According to Mark 13:35 the 4 watches of the night were evening, midnight, c*ck crow and morning. Now I am not sure how long a watch is - perhaps 3 or 4 hours? Roosters do seem to begin crowing way before daybreak. Maybe our resident farmer Allyn knows? Also Peter's denial was to occur as the c*ck crowed. I don't know of any other references right off.
But Israel was the one who had these watches set. And Luke's mention that Jesus coming in the night as the thief would be in either the 2nd or 3rd watch - before the dawning of a new day; seems to imply it would also be at the end of her age. And the resurrection of the dead would therefore be her 4th watch.
Euty wants to apply these watches to the Church Age. But the Church Age is at the beginning of the new covenant age, while Israel was at the end of her old covenant. Her 4th watch would be the day of her resurrection - in the morning of a new day. And that day never ends for those who are in it. Therefore there are no watches set for the Church Age at all, because her kingdom never ends.
Neither Israel nor the world is under any 'watch' anymore. She looks for Messiah to come in vain, having already missed Him. And given that her rendition of Messiah is anti-christ, and that John was clear that she herself IS anti-christ; we are dealing with the result of blindness here in those who cannot see what it right before their eyes. As they look for her to build a temple, etc. so they can find their hope in His return.
This is what listening to the devil's lies does to make men blind. I have not given up the idea yet that Satan's little season is upon us.
