Nice work on the stairs and newel post! I didn't know that's what the post was called. You taught me something! The floor looks like it will be nice, too. A simple pattern that will look great when finished.

The house project is coming along fine even with a couple of setbacks such as my wife undergoing surgery and me being down in the back for 15 days. I have the book shelves in the library built and I am working on some of the more visual finishing touches there. The dry wall is all up (some little areas still undone but all up otherwise). And we have the first coat on 90% of the downstairs and 50% upstairs.

I pray she is recovering okay.

I try to watch how I do things but in the winter all bets are off. My wife had rotator cuff surgery last Tuesday and will be in a PT mode for several weeks. Then she will need the other shoulder repaired. It may be harder since it is an older injury. We are both uninsured and her injury is work related. It took almost 2 years to get WC to provide for her and we had to go to court to get it provided. Its still not all settled. My wife is the one who has to suffer through all this.

Allyn,
Why is she recording them on cards?
Why not use a video camera? She can train the camera on the book while she explains what it is. This would provide a record for insurance purposes. And it would save work.

I've always dreamed of having a library-like office with bookcases and display cases built into the walls. Perhaps my office at work will someday be like that.

Progress report as of March 26.
It all seems like it is going very slow now. I have had one set back in which I had to replace the entire waste drainage system. The original was cast iron and it appeared to be functional but when I tested it (after having added some additional drain lines) I found that the 4" cast was plugged 2 feet thick and the drain pipe was split length ways in several places. Not only that but some of the cast iron had corroded to the point that it was only paper thick in many places. So I replaced it all and it is now ready for use.
My wife humorously now refers to it as the money pit. Its really not and so far it is going as I expected except for the sewage line and the seemingly slow progress. I do fell that we will be able to move in by the end of June. We purchased out kitchen cabinets (ouch) and they sould be in by the end of April.

Kitchen cabinets can be very expensive!
We have another house that we also refer to as the money pit. It's an older, large modular home that George's mom lives in. We just found out this week that it has drywood termites, so we are having it fumigated on Monday. This is the big tent over the whole house method of fumigation. It's not cheap, and is even more expensive than it needs to be because there is a covered awning that goes around the whole perimeter of the house, including a 2-car carport, which all adds to the square footage that needs to be covered by the tent.

I hate to hear about those things. That can be very expensive. My town has termites in certain locations. One block may be infested with them and another block totally free of termits. Our water table is very high and so the bugs don't go very deep. They find untreated homes, stay a while and make a feast out of it.

The subterranean termites (like you described, that are present in the soil) are in patchy places around here, too. However, the ones we have, the drywood termites, are more restricted in area. They occur only along the coastlines, from northern California, all the way around the southern states, up the east coast to North Carolina. The red area on the U.S. map at this site shows their range: www.livingwithbugs.com/drywood_termite.htmlThey don't live in the ground, but in the wood of the structure, thus the need for tenting.

My daughter and I sanded walls and ceilings in the downstairs on Wednesday. I hate the dust it creates but it has to be done. The living room and dining area is now done with regard to the drywall work.

Hey Allyn,
What's with all those bookshelves? Are you one of those like-to-inform-themselves preterists?
